Recently my coach moved me from sweeper to center midfield due to my speed and passing. My dribbling is improving with practice but I still don't understand the role of the midfielder versus a defender. I've played defender all my life, so the change is a bit hard to understand. So what is the main role of a center midfielder? How much do I play back on defense (my natural habit) versus charging into the offensive end? Thanks for the help.

I have a friend who plays central midfielder in college ball, and his coach is strickt on that central midfielder sticking to the middle of the field. He yells at him if he's back in the box, he yelled at him when he scored. So basically the middle of the field is all yours and your purpose is to defend it and make great passes to your forwards, don't go to far from the central circle.
getting there

well firstly the center midfielder is one of the most energentic player on the field, you have to defend and attack. there are two kinds the attacking midfielder and the defencive. I play center midfield myself so i know what its about. Firstly when you attacking always look for thoose ball that split the defence so your forward can run on to, as well try looking for the wings. Aswell try make intellagent runs yourself. My advice would be to watch a attacking midfiled like gerrard or someone. Then the defencive midfield, always getting into the tackles and win the ball back. Try to win all the 50-50 balls and he always gets forward whenever possible. My advice on this would be to watch a player like sissoko.

here this might help you in some more detail. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Midfielder

for a center midfielder you need to be fast and technical!
you need to work all the time, attack and defensive.
you need to be fast to come home again after an attack.
you need to be good in the air, to win balls kicked out by the goalie.
you need to use your wings a lot, and always look for throw passes.
you don't need to be a warrior or a tackler, but could be useful.
and don't press to much forward.
always use cover, thats important.

my coach told me a about a moment when he was young,
he played against this player witch controlled the hole game just
by standing on the midfield circle, he worked all around it, and CONTROLLED
the game, but only in a attack of course.

It doesn't hurt to have a defensive midfielder whose passes suits the teams offence. For me, this is important. Central midfielders assist the team in defence and attack so, have this mindset.

Ur job is to gain back possession and once U're successful, hit the opponent on the break with Ur passes. The mentality is to play like Fabregas will do.

I was shifted from RB to DCM and my job was to break the attacks and orchestrate counter-attacks. It was tiring because I didn't have clear instructions of what to do from my coach. He told me,"Firdaus, I'm switching U to midfield and all U have to do is tackle and pass." I did and I scored 2 and assisted 2.
