What do you need to be a playmaker

Post by thegame » 27 Jun 2005, 20:32

can anybody be a playmaker,
what specific skill is needed apart from (first touch which everybody needs, control)
to become playmaker with style (since everyplaymaker has one i.e zidane, riquelme, aimar)
is speed necessary to become a good playmaker(okocha, riquelme, zidane, bergkamp) are not that fast compared to other players in other positions

some one tell me?

I don't think pace is essential to be a great playmaker but it won't do you any harm to have good pace.
You do however have to have great vision and have a football brain so you not only see things quickly but see things before they happen :D
Without doubt.

Playmakers are those who can start moves that will result into goals. Football brains, ability to hold up the ball to look for openings, good anticipation, positioning (right place, right time) and the bravery to take risks. Doesn't have to be fast, ability to strike fear on the defenders which matters most.

Maldini has said that Ronaldinho is one of the fastest players he's defended, also Pablo Aimar is very quick , and Kaka is pretty fast for a playmaker

does the playmaker has to be the one who assists in goals all the time?

because ronaldo of real madrid has one of the highest assist the team, should he be considered a playmaker?

or

zidane who has far less assist than ronaldo!

and do playmakers have to be behind the front two ?

or could they play in the wings like zidane or ronaldinho

the playmaker must make plays, ie spread the ball across the park, whether their pass is the final ball before a goal doesn't matter. But they must playmake.

To be a playmaker, you need a lot of stamina - as you have to be (directly or indirectly) involved in a lot of plays. As you mentioned, technical mastery is a requirement. You should be able to settle and release any ball that is thrown in your direction. Tactically, a good understanding of the game is important. Playmakers control the flow of a game.
I don't think any of the players you mentioned are real playmakers, except for Zidane. Totti is another good example.

To me a playmaker controls the "heartbeat of a team" without him/her there is no flow, or last pass to the forwards he is the link to the strikers.

Playmakers are gifted players who can release the killer passes. Or coordinate moves that will result into goals.

So who do you guys think are the best playmakers at the moment - I would say Ronaldinho and Zidane (who both usually start games on the left but drift in to the centre) and also Kaka. What do you all think?
Without doubt.

i think the best playmakers r ronaldinho, kaka, totti, aimar, deco and veron. they r all incredibly skillful and hav great passing and shooting. they nearly always make an impact on a game which is what makes a playmaker stand out

i am buffled MODERATORS and EXPERTS can playmakers exist without defensive mildfielders. i dont think zidane would have had chance to express himself in juventus without Edgar David and in Real Madrid without Makelele or now Gravesen

so are the best playmakers those who can defend and attack pretty well such as Gerrad, Ballack rather than Ronaldinho, Riquelme who dont defend as well
