Lampard/Gerrard for central midfielders?

Hello everyone... I was recently watching some football and then when i began playing Fifa 06, an idea finally struck me...Central midfielders are usually more strong/powerful/tough players since they are in the middle of the pitch and need to play both offense/defense and make some critical stops and tackles...but neither Gerrard or Lampard are such big or muscular players like some other central midfielders that are more traditional (Gattusso etc.) My question is...how do lampard and Gerrard perform so well even though they somewhat lack the edge in their position size/strength wise? Thanks om advance :D

Gattuso is more of a defensive player, Lampard especially but also Gerrard are more attacking players, which aren't so big and strong, but more skilled.

The stronger guys usually play DMF or CMF like a Makelele, Emerson, Gattuso and guys that aren't so big and physical are at OMF like Aimar, Zidane, Lampard, but they're very skilled and are good attackers.

I generally find defenders are more strong usually.

They play attack mainly because they are skillful, fast, good passers and they can shoot really well outside the box (especially Gerrard). If youve watched some liverpool games im sure you will have seen the livo strikers passing around the box, then the ball goes to gerrard and BANG, youve got yourself a goal.

They are still probably very strong men, theyplay a demanding position and you can often see them using their strength to keep or take the ball.

Gerrard is an excellent example of an attacking and a defensive player. He tracks back when the ball is being attacked by the opposing team and attacks when Liverpool/England are attacking.
In Istanbul, against AC Milan, he played right back for the last few minutes! I think he is good attacking and defending because of his passion and eagerness to win the ball. He has all the qualities of a defensive and an attacking player, without necessarily having too much strength.
I would certainly consider him one of the best CM in the game, infact wherever he plays. :)
Lampard I feel is just an attacking player, he shoots from far and gets the ball in the back of the net, which is needed foe a CM/AM. I don't feel too much for his defensive skills though.

if i was a manager i would love to have gerrard and lampard as my two cm everytime. gerrard doesnt lack the strenght nor lampard jus look at some of their holding play this season and defensive tackles but i think gerrard is a much better of defencive abilities from a midfielder example aswell his some of his passes are out of this world even though midfielders are ment to have the ability to pass good his are great and gerrard and lampard are to great examples of shot from out of the box. just look at these videos

They are both excellent players but they don't perform that well when they play together for England. Gerrard is often told to play more defensive which isn't his natural game and so we don't see the best of him

They are both pretty strong players, so I dont know how you come off saying they aren't?? Especially Lampard, he is pretty big and strong. Gerrard is an all around excellent player. One of the best midefielders in the world.

Going by a video game is not the best wat of looking at it...

They are excellent midfielders... Just that England can't click together. They aren't given the freedom that their respective clubs allow.

apparently jose moiurinho said one time that lampard and gerrards style of play clash as they are quite similar which is why he doesnt think that they are good on the same team. RUBBISH i say, i mean you can see what he means, but usually teams have one midfielder who holds everything together, and i think that it would be great to have them both on the same team as i believe that they are two of the best if not best midfielders in the world.

But to me... It's gd to have players of the same mentality..

For me and my best friend, playing defence wasn't as hard as we both prioritise clearing the ball out of the penalty box first. It just makes our jobs as CD and RB easier.

But when I play central with him, we will always get mixed up as our patterns for the same position are different. He likes to sheperd the ball while for me, I will make clearance. That's why we aren't the best partners. We compromise with him playing sweeper role while I play in front of him.
