Cobi Jones

Post by soccer11 » 17 Oct 2007, 22:23

i know most of you won't care, but him being one of my favorite players (my first favorite player in fact, all the way back to 1994) i decided to start a thread on him.

Cobi Jones has been one of the most iconic players in the American game since he started to play. known best for his dread locked hair, he has been the pinata for many mexican teams when he played for the US. he represented the USA in 3 world cups. he went to college for one of the better soccer colleges in the country, UCLA. on the club level, Cobi played in England for coventry city, in Brazil for Vasco de Gama, and in the US for the LA Galaxy he also trained with FC Koln of the German bundesliga. Jones was one of the best players in the MLS since the league started and at one point, was considered the best.
Sadly, with all the coverage of Beckham, the news of Cobi retiring was swept under the rub and hasn't been covered. Cobi is still one of the better players on the Galaxy and the most consistant. i always enjoyed watching him play and will miss it when he retires at the end of the season.

Doesn't he have something like the most starts/caps ever for the U.S. national team?

I like how in high school he was told he would never be a "great" player and didn't get into a division 1 college by scholarship. Rather he was a walk-on player to UCLA and while he didn't start at first he ended up becoming a starter within his first year.

Afterall that he is probably one of the best American players. Kind of funny how so many of the best athletes have stories of when they were cut from a team or told they'd never be good yet overcame the odds.

Cobi Jones is one of the greatest, if not the greatest american to ever play the game of football, and I will really miss him playing professionally, but it's good to know that his legacy will endure in America.

was that a question?

and also, i would like to add. i'm pissed off at ESPN for not making his goodbye ceremony a bigger deal. they mentioned it a little bit in the beggining and a little throughout the show, but there was no pre-game show celebrating what he's done in his career, which i thought they whould've done.

I know what you're talkin' bout man. I was pissed too. I figured at the start of the show that they would have some big highlight reel, and all kinds of stuff. But instead, they showed that short segment about him and then one of the commentators just switched the topic to Beckham, like Cobi didn't even matter. The coverage of Becks has really been getting on my nerves lately. I think I may have seen more footage and close-ups of Beckham just warming up on the sideline than I did of Cobi the entire game.

I don't live in the Netherlands, I've just been a fan of the Orangemen for a long time. But I am part Dutch. My great-grandparents on my mom's side were 100% Dutch, and lived in Amsterdam until they moved to the U.S. which is where I live now.

I'm an Ajax fan, too(Haven't watched too many games this year, though, especially with the departure of Babel and Sneijder). Also sorry for taking up the topic.

keller you should know that, and Cobi Jones was a true professional, a great player and an even better role model, one of my first favorite players. It's funny how Cobi Jones and Edgar Davids kinda look alike and they play sorta the same way
