Italy vs. France

Post by Hugh » 15 Jun 2008, 19:06

Okay, here's the scenario

Ned : 6pts
Romania : 2pts
France : 1pt
Italy : 1pt

So the netherlands are guarranteed to go through next round, we can accept that, this will make the battle for the other spot really cool. On one very very unlikely hand Romania beats the netherlands and both Italy and France get knocked out... I mean, the netherlands could let them win, but I don't think they'll do that.

2) Italy and france draw, in that case either netherlands and romania go through or all 3 teams are tied with 2 points, in which case I don't know what happens

3) Italy or france win and go through

So what do you think will happen? Personally neither team has impressed me but Italy looks to be the stronger of these two. In any case both teams will be totally pumped for this because they know that only a win is acceptable in this situation.

Honestly I think the Netherlands are gonna do any team any favors. I have a feeling that they'll send out a barebones team against Romania. That being said they could still beat Romania. What I see happening is Romania getting the tie and Italy vs France being a tie so romania goes through.

This is NOT UNLIKELY at all.
Holland is already on top of this group so they will most likely come out with the reserves.
Van Basten did the same thing in the last WC if I remember correctly.
Romania on the other hand will come out 100% so it wouldn't be surprising at all if they won.

Yeah I agree with expert. After all, Switzerland beat Portugal today since Portugal put out their reserves so I have no doubts that Romania can beat Holland's reserves.

Yeah it will be a good match. I just read on bbc that there won't be a penalty shootout regardless if the game ends in a tie. So it sounds like you better win or go home lol.

yea, i think the Netherlands are gona put all their reserves out like portugal did, and possibly let the Romanians beat them, coz they know italy/france is more harm than romania. and besides, the netherland coach wouldn't want to risk their good players on injury.

France were out of it once Ribery went off. The only consolation to this is Italy didn't get a true goal. I'll refrane from saying more because a mod will have to edit this post anyway if I don't.

i dont get it? I wasnt following the group stage too much but for sure i am going to watch the knock out phases...but you look at their group and you see netherland france italy and romania on paper i would have predicted italy to have gone through in first place and france in second and netherlands and romania going out but thats not what happend here so what went wrong with france? i mean they have an overrall better team then netherlands

No they aren't a overall team then the Netherlands or else they would have gone threw, 2 years ago with zidane and a better Henry they were but they aren't now.

soccerdude510 is talking about how the team looks on paper, not how they actually performed.

And I'm saying that if you look at the performances of each player this season on paper then the Netherlands would still come out ahead.
