why not try if you think you want to. you will only gain experience whatever happens.

In England most academies are under 18. The players playing at this level are full time. In England there is no under 17 teams in pro clubs , it goes from under 16 to under 18.
In Scotland you have under 17 teams which are not full time and then you move up to under 19 which is full time.
Without doubt.

How does the whole academy work? Are there tryouts to get in to them? When do they start? Can you join half way through?

Writing to a club might be helpful........this is what I had sent to an uncle of mine and he passed it around to a few clubs and now I have a trial for Chelsea:

Name: Avyay Gujral
Age: 12 ½ years old
Height: 5 feet 11 inches
Weight: 61.5 kgs.
Nationality: Indian

Dear Sir,
I am writing this letter to you requesting a trial to play for your football club.
I have been playing football for the past 5 ½ years and have played for various football teams in this period. I have played for my county and was the vice-captain of my U-14 team. I was nominated for the U-14 national Indian team but could not attend the try-outs due to injury. I have also played for the top rated club in my county. I have been the captain of my academy’s U-15 team which was being run by Mr. Bill Adams, an ex- Norwich city player. I have also attended courses conducted by Mr. David Collins also an ex- Norwich city player.

I have a great left foot, a good right foot and am known for my ability to play pin-point crosses and long balls. I have good speed, great skill and great physical presence. I have been playing as a playmaker in the center of midfield. I have also previously played on the right and left wings. I have decided to take action because my previous coaches and managers have told me that I could be a good footballer if I am given the right guidance. I have been playing at a relatively low level than that of English players. I am desperately keen to improve and think that I am ready to move to the next level.

I would love the opportunity to show you what I can do, and would be prepared to attend anywhere, anytime for a trial.

Thank you for taking the time out to read my letter and I hope to hear from you soon.
Yours sincerely,
Avyay Gujral

This is truly a great post. One question, where did you find these? Because when I reach my dream playing ability and I feel that I am ready to write to these people (which will probably be never, but who knows?) there are a few clubs that I would try to get to notice me before I contact others (namely Arsenal FC of course or Beveren in Belgium)

Anyways, thanks for all of this.
