ODP is outdated. Oh and it's all politics. Join an academy team if there's one near you. The Academy system is directly part of US Soccer, not USYS but the same association as the national team.

I agree. Go tryout for an academy team and only go the ODP route if you don't have an academy team within a reasonable driving distance.

ODP is all political and only about winning so they'll usually pick the fastest and tallest players over the talented, skillful ones. I've seen it happen.

Agree aswell. There was a kid on my highschool team who everyone who didn't know sh*t about soccer worshipped since he played ODP including our dumbass coach. Anyway this year the team got a new kid who's obviously 10x better and didn't make ODP (despite playing for one of the best clubs in state a few age groups above his age) when he had tried out due to politics. Even if academies aren't near you a good club is often better for you than ODP.

thanks for the info guys i really appreciate it :) but do you know if i would be able to play on an academy team and also a team that plays in a different league? I play for a local club thats in MAPS and Hudson Valley Soccer League but FC westchester is nearby and i'd like to tryout. i've had really bad experiences with switching teams tho and the team im on is doing well and seems to be getting better. i just dont want to make a mistake like that again where it could set me back.

You won't have time to do both. I looked at the FC westchester website and it looks like tryouts have already taken place so you just missed out. I guess you'll have to stay with your club team you are with now.

Trying out and making a development academy team will not set you back, it will move you forward imo.

If you're on an academy team you can't play on another team, including odp. Academy is a huge time commitment and there'd be no room for another team.

you're right, i think already missed tryouts for westchester so i might try for red bulls or ODP but i would feel really bad leaving my team if i couldnt play for both. although, if its the only way and it will help me progress then i will go for it. i have a friend that plays for westchester and i'll ask him if he thinks i can practice with them in the meantime as well as email the coaches to see what the situation is. thanks for all your advice so far guys :)

Yes the NY Redbulls of MLS have academy teams but you have to fill out an application for a tryout.

Well seeing as this thread is about ODP, i'll another question too it.

Who's bright idea was it to make the teams by year of birth? That kinda gives the kids who are born in the early months a really big advantage, in size and development.

For me, I play on 1994 ODP team, but i was born in November, which makes me quite a bit shorter than the other boys. I all play with kids in club, who play 1995 ODP team.

Like I said earlier, ODP is outdated and has nothing on the Academy system.

so as you progress through odp, like say you make it to discricts and then regionals and then the national team, do you have to pay to be on those teams too? specially the national team, thats my main question?
