When It Comes to Music, Which Group/Artist Do You Think...

Post by Rome_Leader » 19 Aug 2008, 19:20

... Has been the most consistently good in all their years of preforming? Could be any genre. Obviously, we are not talking one hit wonders. Not even five hit wonders. The guys that, you could pull anything from their entire catalog and be happy listening to it. For me (And it is a close list.), it's...

1st: Led Zeppelin

Image

Really though, with that cast of guys, pretty much everything they did was an epic. Led Zeppelins I-III were great, and IV was just excellent. Physical Graffiti was amazing. Robert Plant and Jimmy Page are both at the paramount of their crafts, and nobody is second guessing John Bonham or John Paul Jones either. They were masters of their instruments, and certainly paved the way for so much greatness. I mean, just listen to these tracks, all big hits in their time...

- Stairway to Heaven
- The Immigrant Song
- Black Dog
- When the Levee Breaks
- Kashmir
- Rock and Roll
- Whole Lotta Love

etc., etc., etc. These guys cannot really do any wrong, in my eyes. That might be a bit closer to fact then opinion, for sure.

2nd: Muse

Image

Wow, are these guys ever fresh, and they keep getting better. I know with Muse, it's kind of a 'Love 'em or hate 'em' thing... But I love them. I find their sound as innovative as it is great, and usually, I would be turned away from concept albums, but theirs are always the cream of the crop. Just listen to some of these...

- Map of the Problematique
- Black Holes and Revelations
- Starlight
- Supermassive Blackhole
- Hysteria
- Knights of Cydonia

All hits in their own right. And many more.

3rd: Pink Floyd

Image

Floyd is about as magnum opusy as you can get. Every one of their albums, much like Zeppelin, are considered must have classics, from 'The Wall' to 'The DSotM'. Their philosophically and psychedelic drugs charged music and lyrics make them one of the main stays of classic rock. For song samples, try...

- Another Brick in the Wall (Parts I and II)
- Money
- Goodbye Blue Sky
- Shine on You Crazy Diamond
- Comfortably Numb
- Run Like Hell

etc., etc.

You can obviously see the rock overtones, but that's just my tastes. :P Feel free to add and back yours up. Honorable mentions for me include: Rush, Stars, Jack Johnson, Metallica, The Who and The Killers. And forgive me for leaving out The Beatles, but any list that would include them would not be fair. :P

Radiohead is a band for the ages. Much like The Beatles, they've redefined music and shifted it more to fit their vision of it. Creating something totally unique, original, and lasting.

'OK, Computer' was very good, and I'm a fan of Thom Yorke and what his innovation has done for music, but I have to say... Radiohead just isn't my bag. :P If it is though, I can see how pretty much all their music would be likable. 'Just' is my favorite song by them and also, one of my favorite music videos ever.

U2 without a doubt. they've been doing it over a span of 4 decades and still are pumping out hits. You'd be hard-pressed to pick one best song, because you say one, then you go "well beautiful day is great, and so is vertigo, ect...)

No, seriously, I love them too! :P That's why I was surprised I forgot about them. You're right, it checks out...

- City of Blinding Lights
- Vertigo
- Where the Streets Have No Name
- Angel of Harlem
- One
- With or Without You

etc.

My picks would be Metallica and Ac/dc?

I would put the Killers because they are my favorite band but they dont have the title of Rock Legends. Yet...

tbh, AC/DC has some good, catchy stuff, but they are consistent in a bad way, as every track sounds very similar, and the cord progression is the same. That doesn't make them bad, I love AC/DC, but they need to try new stuff methinks to get that title. However, it has been said the best trick an artist can do is sell an LP with only two or three cords. ;)

That's why I put them as honorable mentions. ;)

i've never been a fan of AC/DC either, and sorry to say rome, not a fan of led zeppelin.
a band i do like is aerosmith. they have plenty of good songs and pretty consistent with hits.

more U2:
Sunday Bloody Sunday
Elevation
all because of you
:D goes on of course

p.s. personal opinion: One is best song all-time.

*stammers* To... Each... His own... I guess... :o :P

One (the U2 song, not the Metallica song, although both are good) is a good song, but yeah, pretty much alone in the opinion of best song of all time, except amongst other U2 fanatics. ;)

Ahh yes, Queen. Freddie Mercury was quite a showman, but I dunno if his musical ability and Brian May's and crew was up to say, Zeppelin.
