I just use electrical tape. It comes in different colours, stretches well, and won't ruin your socks. You should be able to get it in any hardware store or the like.

are you talking about electrical tape? if you are, then like Lowes.com or HomeDepot.com are you best choices, i think

electrical tape is extremely cheap and does the job, also choice of colour is good.
i use strapping tape, i like the width, but is a more expensive option but lasts a long time

I've worn the same shinguards for many years, back in the day when all shinguards had ankle pieces (or at least most did). Whenever I wear a shinguard without ankle guards, it feels like I'm missing something there. It might just be because I primarily play goalkeeper and get in a lot of rough situations every game, but still. I think it has more to do with preference than safety.

I think next season I am going to play with those reusable ankle wraps, that use velcro. I believe they will be a lot better job of protecting my ankles.
