Hello and welcome aboard. It's a hard question but you need at least 2-3 sessions per week to maintain any kind of fitness. Probably more like 3-4 in the first week or two as you are starting out. Even if he doesn't get in the best (Division 1) soccer school right away there are ways to transfer later on and he might be eligible for a scholarship. The fullback position is somewhat similar to a forward since both require a lot of speed.
There are many pro fullbacks who started out as attackers in their youth.
If you are still 11 years old, then I wouldn't make too much of it.
It's perfectly normal to switch positions as you get older.
