During your "foundation phase" you don't need to do long distance running (LDR). The issue is that it could slow you down and make you less power. Everyone looks at soccer as an aerobic sport. And the aerobic system does contribute a lot to soccer. The issue is how do we build the aerobic system wit...

Well I could not tell you to not do cross country running. I think people think they are compatible because some think that because soccer has a big aerobic component they have to train it by using long distance running. That is false. There have been studies that have shown an increase in aerobic q...

Re: Does anyone do long distance running?

Don't do it. It could make you slower. I agree with the other people that you should not do too much long distance running. Look at interval training to get into shape. It can actually improve anaerobic and aerobic system. Double the bang. Taylor www.elite-soccer-fitness.com I have started a year lo...

speed

How many days do you have for speed and agility? Taylor www.elite-soccer-fitness.com Well, I normally do a full agility routine, with ladders, box jumps, sprints (3x30m, 3x60m, 3x90m), and rope-skipping all crammed into one day because I don't have enough time to do agility, but every week I seem to...

Speed training

Just a couple of thoughts. This is based on off season training

1) Strength training-4 days a week
2) speed training-4 days a week. 2 agility ( lateral speed) 2 linear. alternate these

Toning

Toning is about losing the fat around the muscles you build. You can lift weights till you are blue in the face but if you still have fat around them you won't be toned. This means you need to eat right, exercise and lift weights. In other words you need to do multiple things to lose that extra fat....

acceleration

I know this is a few weeks late but the key to acceleration is getting stronger. To get stronger you need to lift heavy. This does not make you huge just really strong.

weight training for legs

You should base your weight training routine around a few movements.

1) Knee extension-Squats, Single squats
2) Hip Extension-Single Leg hip extensions. These will save the back.
3) power exercises- like hang clean etc.

Endurance training

Doing long distance running for fitness can be bad for a soccer player. I know that sounds contridictory to everything you have learned growing up. I mean we all see athletes hitting the streets doing mile after mile preparing for the season. But when is soccer do you ever see an athlete always jogg...

Isometrics

Isometrics should only be incorporated with a normal strength training routine. If I remember Isometrics only trains in a range of about 20% from the angle you are working. ( I might not remember this right though) There is an article on this other site about functional isometrics, it is free. http:...

Beep test

The issue with normal beep tests is that they are not soccer specific. I would say the one you did at school was more continuous in nature, in that you were always jogging. Soccer is not like this. I don't recommend doing the beep test for training because it is continuous in nature. Science has sho...

squats and fast twitch

Since I don't know your training background age etc. I will make this a general statement. This is very important when training. I just posted about this in another topic but here is the idea. I think sometimes soccer players have a misconception that they need to lift light. But in most athletics t...

Ankle weights

This is how I look at it. To become fast here are a couple of things: 1) squats-Knee extension 2) Hamstring specific work-Hip extension (not leg curls) 3) plyometrics 4) power exercises 5) technique work 6) flexibility 7) core work Bottom line you need to be strong. So lift weights. Use the tried an...
