I'm trying out for my high school soccer team in only a little more than two months! I've been doing some light jogs through the park, a little bit of sprinting, and some swimming and biking. Is there anything I can do to improve reaction time (I'm a goalie) or agility? |
Good reflexes depend primarily on genetic factors.
Experience will eventually make you better attuned to visual, auditory and tactical clues during matches.
You will become aware of when the attacker drops his eye, how the he plants his supporting foot and so on.
There are many drills for improving your reaction time but they will usually require a training partner.
1. Visual
Set two balls about two meters apart in front of the goal you are defending.
The kicker is supposed to fake which ball he will strike.
Your job is to stay at the goal line and attempt to save the ball only after it has been hit.
2. Auditory
Stand about 5 meters away with your back towards your partner.
He has the ball in his hands and tosses it to your left or right while simultaneously saying the direction.
You turn according to his feedback and try to handle the ball.
3. Dynamic
Start with the ball in your hands. Toss it up and quickly lie down on your stomach. Extend your arms out and then get back on your feet trying to catch the ball before it hits the ground.
You can come up with alternative versions of these drills. For example, in the third one you can do a summersault instead of lying down. by Expert 13:47:09 Wednesday 11 August 2004 |
