As a striker, how do you know when to make a run, I mean what if you get behind the defense and the pass does not come in, how do you signal your teammate to make a through pass?
There are two types of runs that you can make: towards the ball (checking run) or away from it. As a forward, you don’t want to isolate yourself from the midfield line so running up behind the enemy defense should be done only when scoring opportunities are likely to result.

When you are playing alone against two or more defenders, it is usually a bad idea to run behind them. This will usually produce an uncontrolled footrace that you have bad odds of winning, especially when the enemy goal is far away or the pass lacks accuracy. It is much better to check to the ball and lay it off back to the midfielders. This will give them the chance to step up and serve you the ball with more precision.

When should you run away from the ball? When the midfield line has stepped up forward enough to serve you the ball with accuracy through or over the enemy defense. The way you signal for a through pass is by making the run forward. You may also vocally notify your teammates. If a pass doesn’t come, continue your run out towards the sideline, but be careful not to get caught offside.

Basically, when there is a lot of FREE SPACE between the midfield-forward line you have to check and play the ball back so the midfielders can step up.
