The problem you have mentioned is more common than you think. The classic symptoms, as you have experienced, are freezing up and booting the ball upfield for no reason. The cause of this problem is fear of failure, usually fueled by lack of information. By lack of information I mean not knowing what to do or not being aware of what is happening around you.
The first thing you need to realize is that mistakes are a part of the game and you will never be able to play without erring at least once in a while. Secondly, start looking around the field when you are not in possession. Do not just focus in on the ball, but scan where your teammates/enemies are and what they are doing. Frequently glance over your shoulder and be aware of what is happening behind you, especially when you have your back towards the enemy goal. At first, all this information may feel overwhelming, but eventually you will learn what to filter out and what to pay attention to.
Now that you have absorbed all of this data, think of what you will do when you get the ball. While scanning the field, you have probably noticed one or two good options. Decide prior to receiving the ball, what you are going to do with it. Try to make sensible decisions: there is no point in dribbling through five enemy defenders or clearing the ball if there is no pressure on you. Work through your mistakes and be prepared for physical contact. There is no way to avoid either, so concentrate on your own game.
Most importantly – have fun, take your time and try to relax. At the end of the day, the game will consist of 22 players on a grass pitch – nothing you haven’t seen before. by Expert 05:37:45 Saturday 3 April 2004 |
