international refs

I was wondering what language do the refs speak in a international game??? Ex: Portugal vs Czech, does the ref speak english or just his own language to the players? (if he's foreign) Or does he speak portuguese, or czech?
Its just been bugging me

Nowadays, every civilized European speaks at least some English. It could be a requirement for international refs, but I'm not 100% sure.
But in general the ref doesn't need to speak with the players at all, unless he needs to caution somebody. In fact that's why yellow/red cards were introduced (in the 70s), after a miscommunication during the World Cup. Also, this is unrelated but I've noticed that goalkeepers didn't wear gloves until the late 70s/early 80s. |
