Weak Foot Guide

All great players use their two feet that god gave them

Having two good feet is a lot better then having one great and one bad one!!! This can add a whole new dimension to your game and can make you twice the player!!!

1. Weak Foot Kicking

There are a few things that effect your kicking technique and ability when using your weak foot …

The Technique

When learning the technique it may feel weird and unnatural to try kick the ball, this is completely normal as your body isn’t used to the motion, the more you practice with it the better your foot will get!!!

Follow Through
you would be surprised but it is quiet hard to follow through with your weak foot, it takes a lot of practice to get it right, try just kicking stones or even air!
as for all kick techniques its just about getting your body used to the motion for the technique, so if at first it doesn work just stick at it and it will come!

Basic Kick Techniques
the basic kick techniques you should learn for your weak foot are
Side Foot
Instep Drive
Outside of foot
Inside Curl

Check out these Techniques
Ball Striking Guide

Learn to get the accuracy and technique right when kicking instead of getting insane curl or power on your kick straight away!
with these well practiced your weak foot will start getting a lot more advanced, before you move on to more advanced techniques you should learn the ones that are most useful to you, e.g. if you’re a winger learn to cross the ball not how to rabona with your weak foot

Body Attributes
Leg strength and Flexibility, having strong muscular legs would really help when learning to kick with your weak foot… as you can hold yourself better, you have more control over your legs

Another vital attribute to have (for any skill) is balance, this can help you keep all the power in your kick, the whole kicking movement is based on balance. this really helps your weak foot as your body is more steady when you swing

Balance Guide

Improving Balance
stand on one leg when brushing your teeth (with your eyes closed to make it extra hard)
practice footstalling with your eyes closed!

The Rabona
You can also learn the rabona as a substitute to your weak foot, I advise to learn both of then, you shouldn’t neglect your weak foot, it is just so important.

2. Dribbling & Controlling

Weak Foot Dribbling
Again learn the simple cuts and body movements before trying to do the flip flap!
also get comfortable with turning quickly with your weak foot

Never overlook the importance of dribbling with your weak foot! Is makes you so much more unpredictable especially if you can do tricks,
a very easy way to improve your dribbling touch is to juggle with your weak foot, learning to keep the ball close to your feet when dribbling will greatly improve, try cutting past defenders with simple double cuts with both feet!

Touch & Control
A largely overlooked skill is being able to control the ball (especially in the air) using your weak foot, this will improve by hours of smashing it against the wall and touching it, learn to flick the ball over your head, to turn, to get that perfect touch with your weak foot so even a bad pass by a team mate and your onto it
juggling with your weak foot will greatly improve its ability to control the ball

3. Weak Foot Training

The best way to improve your weak foot is by using it! You wanna be a better kicker, kick the ball it’s the simple, a wall and a ball will go a long way, if you ever have an oppotunity to use it don't hesitate to try!

another thing you should practice is volleying with your weak foot!
this is very important and helpful and often overlooked

having confidence in your ability will greatly improve your sucess rate, as most people have a mental block when it comes to their weak foot

For improving your weak foot you should merge it into your training routine.

when doing normal training try to have a 3:1 or 2:1 ratio of touches for your feet...

example:
for every shot with your strong foot take two with your weak or for every two juggles with your strong take four with your weak

it will be slow progression at the start, but you will soon see a massive improvement... as you become more advanced try to use your weak foot more in games, and make sure you have the basic techniques well drilled before trying harder techniques....

heere is a way to improve your weak foot amazingly in 2 weeks:

-100 shots against a wall everyday (and control then on return)
-100 passes (1st time preferably) against a wall everday
-dribble through 10 cones 10 times everyday and shoot or pass at the end
-juggle 100 times and volley at a wall or goal after every 10 juggles

How to Train
Kakasgotskillz wrote:
Go behind a net with mesh on it. Stand about 5m away from the net. Practice your form for about 100 shots, just walking up to the ball, and hitting it with your instep (sorta slower than you would normally do it), then stop right upon contact so you can see the way the ball moves (curl, spin, etc.), and experiment a little bit with your plant foot placement, angle of approach, angle of your foot, ankle locking, etc.

Once you're done that, you take around 50 more shots running to the ball, but still stopping upon contact. The important part of this is that your foot slowly adapts to the motion of your shot. It feels pretty awkward at first, but you ease into it after a while. Also, keep your eye on the ball (you should already know that). Follow the ball with your eye until it hits the mesh of the net.

Finally, you'll add in the follow through. This takes much longer, possibly 100-200 shots before you're completely satisfied. There's two types of follow throughs you can try: the step through (where you just kinda walk through the ball, and land on your supporting foot, kinda like the way CR7 follows through on his freekicks), and the hop (exaggerated foot motion). Remember, form>speed at all times. Always go slow, until your leg is comfortable with the movement.

The tip is that it'll take you many runs before you can do a shot properly in a game, even though results are pretty much instantaneous when you practice. A full run of this would probably take around 45 minutes, but is really relaxing and restful. The point of going behind the net is that you can practice on grass (normally you'd need a wall which requires pavement unless you have a rebounder) and the ball will still come back to you (well not really but atleast you don't have to run back and forth for it).

The weak foot can turn a good player to an amazing player, its all in practice And repetition… keep at it and your progress will suddenly start to speed up amazingly…
Never think that your not able to do something or the mental block will hinder you more than anything else!

thanks guys for the comments! hope this helps!!!

I've been trying to improve my weaker foot and my progress has been slower than what i want it to be. this'll help its broken down and makes things easier. thanks

yeah man relentless training is what will get you there, in edited in a little bit on how to quickly improve your weak foot

the guide looks a little empty so if anyone has any tips, ideas, suggestions (anything!) i would be happy to edit it in :D

Something I think could be improved with the way it is written...it is nice that you have a space between every line because it makes it easier to read, but I think it could be compressed to make it shorter. The nice part about the guide is that it is informative without being excessive, but I thing the length added by excess spaces is making it a little long winded, Idk, just my opinion. Honestly when I read a guide I just go to the parts that apply to me and read all of that section, but not much else. I don't think it is necessary for your contents to be that complicated. If someone needs to know about "Dribbling and Controlling" they will go to that section and read it all, so no need to put "the importance of dribbling" and "control the ball", etc. in the contents.

thanks again it actually looks much more tidy now!

wow wil try use as much of this as i can. my left foot is an okay short passer but purely embarassing with crossing and shooting

Its important you learn to cross with your left, as a winger it will massively improve your game

u should also try defending with ur weak foot, get a friend to dribble at u or something, cause i dont know if it happens to u all, but, its harder for me to stick out my right foot, and my coach always asks me,cant your right foot work?,but i guess all i need is balance i dont know

its because your right foot isnt coordinated well enough, you need to work on it, all good defenders are two footed. My left foot is getting better and better and i am seeing improvements in my defending too.

I have a question about my left foot.

Yesterday i was practicing with my left foot, and was passing to the wall and trapping. Then, I did juggling and volleying against the wall. It was going pretty well for me, but I still need to improve on it.
When I tried to do shots, however, it was a catastrophe. All of my shots were toe-punts or curved. I tried everything I could to improve it- but then my left foot started to hurt really badly. How can I improve my instep drive with the ball on the ground with my left foot?

As a person who was able to make the switch from almost exclusively right dependent to a two-footed player who prefers the left in about two months, I would say it is important to treat your left almost like your right! (Or vice versa, depending on which foot is your weak one.) The approach is a little different, but the technique is fundamentally the same. The biggest problem is, people try to alter their technique TOO much.

Furthermore, most of it is a mental error. People just get believing only one foot works, and they never shoot with the other one. When they do, they are convinced it will be terrible. When they do shoot, it turns out to be terrible, and most make petty excuses like "That's my wrong foot!"

Practice helps, but your technique for the foot is still the same. Lock the ankle, drive with the instep, follow through with your shot, etc.
