1. Kicking techniques

Firstly lets go through the basic aspects of kicking…

Support foot
This is the foot that you hold all your balance on when shooting, this also has a major factor on how your gonna strike the ball and what way it will fly
your support foot affects your swing path of your leg, so if this is incorrect your whole kicking motion will be incorrect
also the power of your shot comes from how quick you contract and swing your leg (not how hard you try hit the ball) so your support foot must be well postioned to give it a clean swing path, your lean is very important aswell

Basically...
1)If you want dip... put your foot behind the ball
2)If you want low and hard... put your foot infront of the ball
3)if you want a normal kick... put your foot beside the ball

this is a great guide and should help you…
The Plant Foot (Form, Theory, Reason)

Body Orientation
this is a vital part of shooting, having good balance will really help you when shooting, but if your facing away from goal it is alot harder to get a decent strike off, players with a good technique could put some power behind these shots...
when your facing goal it is alot easier to shoot, so if your have the time to turn... TURN!
also the way you lean when kicking determines the power and height of a kick...
Basically...
1)if you want a high shot... lean back
2)if you want a low shot... lean forward
3)if you want a powerful shot... lean away (sideways) from the ball

the type of lean you do changes the swing path of your leg, thus your shot type...

The Follow Through
of a shot determines how powerful, how much curl, which way it will curl and how accurate the shot will be, with a good follow trough the ball seems to bounce off your foot, like your kicking a ballon! Say you want the ball to dip, you just have to stop your follow through. Or for it to curl you have to follow through across your body… just watch Roberto Carlos's folow through on one of his free kicks, its smooth and he puts his whole body into it...
Basically...
1)if you want dip... stop your follow through after contact (mabye even retract your leg)
2)if you want power... follow through completely and 'hop' onto your kicking leg (this puts your whole body into the motion)
3)if you want curl... swing your leg across your body

Swerve
Curling Shots
the ability to swerve the ball is a great skill to posess, it is vital for beating keepers or tricking them or even passing around players!!!

Curling the ball means striking the side of the ball to make it spin and move in the air...
Basically... (presuming your right footed)
1)when you want to curve it right to left with your right foot (inside curve) you hit the right side of the ball and follow through towards your target it an almost circular motion to elongate contact.
2)to curl the ball from right to left (with the outside of your boot)... hit the ball on the right side, see Trivlea (in the kick techniques section) for more info on this...
3)for backspin (so it hangs in the air)... hit the very bottom of the ball
4)for topspin (so it dips quickly)... hit just under the centre of the ball (you will also need your support foot behind the ball)

so if you want the ball to curl from left to right with topspin, you hit the ball on the left side just under the centre of the ball, you will also need your support foot behind the ball and folow through across your body (depending on your Trivlea technique)

Note:
change around directions if your using your left foot

also for most cases you should use you weak foot as much as possible instead of the outside of your foot

Topspin Guide

To get knuckle swerve
hitting it straight in the centre with the right technique will cause it to knuckle (swerve from left to right in mid air while dipping but it wont spin)
i will go into more detail on this later...

So Putting Them All Together:
if you want a high shot that curls left to right and dips...

1) put your foot behind the ball (for dip)
2) lean back (for height)
3) you hit the ball on the left side just under the centre of the ball (for topspin and curl)
4) swing your leg across your body (for curl)

Hitting The Ball When Moving

Image

This is a very very important aspect of kicking, to be good you must learn how to kick a moving ball...
you must practice puttimg your plant foot in the ball path and swing for where the ball WILL be not AT it

Try your best to keep good form and not lean back to far

1-touch shooting is the most important way of shooting, the most important thing is to concentrate on getting a good contact, that should bring the ball on frame (if your body postion was good) and pretty hard, the moving ball usually should give you the shots momentum

this is so vital as it can be from 30 yards to 3, and if you don't work hard on getting good at this, you will find it very difficult to improve

Kick Techniques:
is is great to have a varied vocabulary of kicks techniques, but it takes alot of practice to get good at them...

Basic Techniques:
There are 5 kicking techniques that should be perfected before you try anything hard, these 5 techniques are:

Side Foot: Push Pass Video
With the arch of your foot strike the ball so it is a soft and accurate pass… follow through fully or just stop your foot, if your laying it off… kick it slightly harder for a shot

Image

Support foot
this should generally be just behind the ball, yout toe in line with the middle and about a foot away from the ball

Contact
the arch of your foot, bend your foot sideward to get the effect

Body Orientation
keep a pretty upright posture, for greater accuacry lean back, and experiment with different lean's when passing long range

The Follow Through
stop your foot the second after contact, this keeps the ball rolling along the ground, if you are passing over distance mabye lifting your leg as a follow throught to make the ball bounce and harder to intercept

Instep Drive: Instep Drive Video
Strike the ball with your laces and follow through with a hop onto your kicking leg, good for a long pass or any type of shooting… a little less accurate then side footing but more powerful... if you hit the ball dead in the centre it will go alot quicker through the air with no spin (it goes quicker because there is no air resistance the a spinning ball creates)

locking your ankle is very important as it makes you instep point out of your foot, and also helps you get a more powerful and accurate shot

to lock your ankle just point your toes to the gound until your leg becomes a straight line from your shin to your toes

Image

Support foot
this should be close to the ball a few inches away, so you get a clean swing with your leg

Contact
with your instep, put your finger on your big toe, follow the bone until you reach about the middle of your foot when there is a sticky outtie bit, thats your instep

Body Orientation
it is very important to LEAN AWAY from the ball (not backwards but sidewards), as your ankle will be locked and will catch on the ground if you don't lean away and give your leg a clean strike path

The Follow Through
now depending on the swerve you want your follow through will change, but if you are going for power of curl try to hop, which is basically when kicking let your whole body follow your kicking leg upward, and remember to land on your kicking leg, this is not nessecary for power but is a good technique to learn

If You Foot Hurts When Attempting this Kick:

you can lock your ankle perfect but then go to absoulutly murder the ball with a kick and contact it with more the top of your foot (near your toes) and since you were thinking you were gonna strike it with your instep, your whole foot gets twisted and you hurt it (especially round your ankle and just above your instep) this is down to bad technique (also you could be placing your support foot in the wrong place, like too far behind the ball so you contact it all wrong) which is quite easily fixed with practice

another thing could be your ankle is not locked properly and your foot is 'loose' and when it hits the ball its not ridgid and it absorbes the power of the shot (which makes it really sore) and leads to a bad kick

you could just try 'curling your toes down' and keeping your knee over the ball

and the last thing could be your body position, mabye you should try leaning sideways away from the ball so your leg has a nice smooth strike path, and you should be contacting the ball with your foot kinda diagonally going through it...

Get into the habit of learning to 'lock my ankle FOR THE WHOLE KICKING MOTION INCLUDING THE FOLLOW THROUGH, its just a matter of learning how to contact the ball, it will come with practice...

Outside of Boot: Outside of the foot Drive Video
Hitting the ball with the outside of your foot, follow through the ball or across the ball for spin, quite powerful and surprisingly accurate when you get the hang of it…

roberto carlos was wicked at this shot and his secret was his beautiful follow through, he accelerates onto the ball and then swings his leg up and around his support foot, then lands on it

Support foot
now this largely depends on your technique, but generally a foot away from the ball

Contact
The Whole side of your foot

Body Orientation
now this is mostly down to your technique, generally try lean away from the ball (back and sidewards)

The Follow Through
again down to technique but usually
across the body (you leg swings across your body to enhance curl)

Inside Curl: Great Curling Shots
Strike the ball with the part that joins the instep to the side of your foot, follow through across the body to generate the curl.
A young Brazilian midfielder nicknamed Didi was the first to discover this, before the ball was always blasted with power and accuracy.

The Magnus force
That is the name for the effect by which spin reduces the air pressure on one side of the ball and increases it on another, making it curl, this is down to the spinning motion 'pushing' the air around one side of the ball and basically moving into the less resistant pocket of air beside it.
Physicists have estimated that over thirty metres, a ball can curl upwards or sidewards from its normal course by as much as four metres. which is half the lenght of a goal. that is also excluding the possibility of wind, which could add metre's to the curl.
To put it in perspective, beckham's free-kicks rotated (on average) 10 times per second

Image

hitting the ball in the right place is the way to get the hang of this, there are so many variations to doing this trick you should just go out and practice to see how you kick it, the most important things are:

-your approach: the angle you approach the ball, try aim for where you want the ball to start off going not where you want it to curl into

Image

Support foot
really depends on your technique

Body Orientation
this determines your strike and swing path, leaning back for height and away for a clean strike

Contact
try hit it to one side of the ball to create spin

The Follow Through
follow through by trying to elongate contact with the ball, so your leg should swing across your body

Korean Curling Shots

Korean Curling Shots

Trivela (outside curl): Quaresma Triverla Complation
With the top and outside of your boot strike the middle of the ball or slightly to under and to one side for height… if preformed correctly this can have amazing curl…

the follow through of this kick is quite varied to a person's technique so you can practice to see which way suits you, the most common difference is some people prefer to swing their leg across their body or swing it out to one side (like quaresma in the video)

Support foot
generally should be far from the ball, but is down to your technique

Body Orientation
again down to your technique

Contact
Whole side of foot

The Follow Through
now depending on your technique you either

Follow through across your body
or
let your leg to swing out and away from your body

just practice and you will notice a which way you are best at...

Advanced Techniques:
Once you have mastered these techniques (with both feet!)
You can move onto the harder techniques…

Chip: Messi Super Chip
Quite easy to do can strike any part of your foot, preferably your instep, just get your foot under the ball and the second you contact the ball retract your leg or just stop it by jamming it into the ground…

there is a way of digging your foot right under the ball with the top of your foot that gives it alot of backspin and height, or hitting the ball just below centre to give it alot of topspin and dip

Support foot
should be close to the ball

Contact
well generally with your instep, but can be done with almost any part of your foot

Body Orientation
lean very far back, this is to get your foot right under it

The Follow Through
make sure you do not follow through and try your best to stop the ball on contact

Backheel: Ronaldo Backheel
Striking the ball With your heel… can be great for fooling opponents, and very stylish to score this way

Image

another alternative is the Rabona backheel
which is basically a backheel where your backheeling leg goes infront of your support leg and then contacts the ball, harder to get great power but way more stylish

Contact
with your heel or the side of your heel

Rabona: Ronaldo Rabona
Kicking the ball by swinging your leg around your supporting foot and striking it… much easier to cross the ball, than to shoot… hopping onto the kicking leg is important, this move takes along time to learn

Image

Support foot
should be infront of the ball

Contact
with the top of your laces

Body Orientation
leaning away from the ball for height on the ball

The Follow Through
your support foot would usually stop you having any follow through

Curling Chip Shot: Henry Curling Chip
Open your body up and strike the ball with your big toe's knuckle… your plant foot must be behind the ball for this to work… great way to score, Henry is fantastic at this type of kick, the trick is not to follow through sideways but forward and up

Support foot
far from the ball

Contact
with the side of your big toe (around where the big toe joins to the metatarsal)

Body Orientation
lean back from the ball

The Follow Through
like a chip you should stop your foot on contact with the ball

Scoop Kick: Watch Ronaldinho do it at 3:32 (This was very hard to find!)
Scoop the ball so you foot is completely under it and fling it up in the air! Doesn’t go very far but dips seriously fast…

Contact
the ball should be caught by the foot (kinda like a footstall) and flung up into the air, very easy with practice

The Follow Through
like a bicycle retract your leg as if your pedalling

Toe Punt: Ronaldinho versus Chealsa
Cant really be considered a skillful kick, very hard to pass as the curl is unpredictable… but if your feeling lucky try it as a shot, it can be amazing (witness Ronaldinho’s Goal against Chealsa in 2004)

Contact
with your big toe

Scotch Move: See Ronaldo do it at 0:51
Backheel the ball onto the inside of your other foot which is slightly behind it, looks great as a pass. Very hard to get air on it… I’ve never seen some score by doing this…

when trying to get this airboure lean away from the ball and you will find it alot easier

Image

Support foot (the foot that you backheel the ball ONTO)
this should be behind and slightly to one side of your backheeling foot (depending on which way you want the ball to go, to the left or right of your backheeling foot)

Contact
the heel of you backheeling foot to the inside (usually close to the heel) of your support foot

Body Orientation
lean back to get height on the ball

The Follow Through
none really, you should end up standing on the leg you backheeled with

Special Control Chip:
Begin to perform a normal Inside Curl or Long Pass, but on contact stop your follow through completely, this should let the ball have a steady dip at a reasonable speed… great when chipping the keeper or passing behind the defence…

Support foot
close to the ball

Contact
with your instep

Body Orientation
lean back

The Follow Through
try stop your leg on contact

Fake Shooting: Watch Van Nistelrooy do it against Werder Bremen
Feel straight below your ankle beside the inside of your foot to the side of your heel, when shooting 1v1 or finishing a low cross look to one side of the the goal and shape your body as if your gonna do a normal controlled side foot shot, but strike the ball to the opposite corner with the side of your heel, will take practice to get decent power… but can leave a keeper diving the complete wrong way… the most practical way to use this is when opening your body as if to curl the ball to the far post but you then cut the ball to the near post

Contact
the inside of your foot (but the back of your foot, closest to your heel)

Body Orientation
really shape up to try curl the ball into the far post, and at the last second swivel and slot the ball home

the very best can even leave out the swivel and sell it so well it looks like a mis-kick

Image

The Follow Through
follow through as you would normally do in an inside curl shot

Now that you know most of the techniques
We can move on to how to use them…

Top Spin Drive
Watch Ronaldo do it at 1:54
This is a technique designed to make the ball dip while maintaining a high pace, it involves catching the ball just above the middle so you strike over the core of the ball
here's a diagram I nicked off klc123 that is handy:

Image

Support Foot
This should remain slightly behing the ball (your toes should be in line with where you want to hit the ball), so you have a decent swing path at the ball and so it aids the contact and spin applied

Contact
With your instep and the same place as show on the diagram

Body Orentation
You should lean over the ball, and preform a crunching movement (trying to touch your knee off your chin) this should make the ball gain a bit of height

Follow Through
Same as a normal instep drive

Advanced Instep Drive
Watch Ronaldo versus Sporting Lisbon

This is basically and instep drive struck to such perfection that the ball does not spin in the air
it may sound easy but a shot like this is extremly hard to strike

Support Foot
this should be close to the ball (but not glued to it)

Contact
Lock your ankle (point your toes at the ground so your instep is level with your shin)
in general a ball struck in the centre will get the best knuckle

you want to strike the ball with your instep, or in or around that area (there is no special part of your foot) just a solid contact with your instep will do the trick
you may not think it but thats how ronaldo hits it

Body Orentation
As you go to swing at the ball make sure your leg has a clean 'swing path' by leaning away from the ball

the more ridgid your swing is the worse the shot is
just concentrate on getting a clean swing, by loosening up

Follow Through
and with a clean swing comes a clean follow through, thus a clean strike

Swerve
See a great Free Kick at 1:47
In baseball, pitchers use spin to throw a curveball, much as
footballers do in a swerving free-kick. Aerodynamic effects ensure a similar outcome – a regularly curving trajectory. But in baseball, pitchers sometimes throw a wicked delivery called a knuckleball. Here the ball is released at speed, but with very little spin.
It dodges about unpredictably in flight and the batter is often reduced to swiping at fresh air when the ball arrives. This behaviour is well understood and is caused by the ball’s seam drifting into and out of the air flow as it gently rotates. Each incursion of the seam causes aerodynamic instability and a resultant deflecting force. An instant later a different portion of the seam comes into play and the direction of the force switches, hence the chaotic movement.
Ronaldo's freekicks are very similar, he unleash's a non-spinning shot and according to his follow through the ball will rotate (which almost enhances the 'magnus force' effect) which cause's the simply un-attainable swerve and power.
Although recently ronaldo has begun hitting the drives straight and fast, and allowing the naturally seams and areodynamics of the ball cause it to swerve from left to right and back at times.
Just watch it in action at stoke:

Ronaldo Knuckle Shot versus Stoke
You need to learn to hit the ball with a perfect instep drive before you even attempt this

Image

Here's my little guide on it

Step 1 (will take 4-5 months)

-learn to flawlessly hit the ball with no spin (it doesn't need dip)
preferably a hard straight drive, that is hitting the top corners
go through all the motions of hitting a decent instep drive
and perfect YOUR way of striking a instep drive (eg. ronaldo hits it near his toes, i'm the same, but some people would be higher up the foot, whatever is natural)

the bottom line the best technique to learn is 'your' technique
and really try hard, cause you will not be able to hit the ball well at all to start with
once you can hit the ball with no spin every time flawlessly, your ready for the next step

Ronaldo versus Fulham

Step 2 (will take 2-3 months)
now that the hard part is out of the way you can manipulate the ball

so when taking a dipping shot, stop your follow through, and strike just below the centre line
this will be easier then learning to swerve the ball left or right
but with consistent practice you will improve

you know when its right (firstly you will feel the ball like 'hugs' your foot as you kick it)
and the ball will be still in the air and then suddenly (according to the spin you apply) it will revolve a few times and change to that direction

when you can get the ball to consistently curl the way you want your ready

Ronado versus Europe IX

Step 3 (1-2 month)

now its in the accuracy part
its easy to get the ball to knuckle, its hard to get it to knuckle just as it passes the ball, and hit the side netting (or as close to it possible)

this all about judgement and practice, you will also have to try applying your technique to matches, you won't aslways be succesful but its part of learning

in general you wanna get the ball to hit its peak as it reaches the wall and then make it knuckle from that point on

soon you will be putting a fair few of them on target, and scoring the odd one

Ronaldo versus Portsmouth

Step 4 (for the rest of your career)

basically this is maitinence
you would be much better off to aim for 10 perfectly struck kicks per day, instead of 70 every sunday

but if you do miss a day add your reps to the next session
the best time to practice is before a hard training

Ronaldo versus Dynamo Kiev

The Crunch
If you watch Cristiano he almost knee's his chin at one point of his kick

This is to don with his upperbody follow through

When taking the kick you want to lift the ball off the ground (so it can begin to spin)
but you don't want it to go into outer space
lifting your knee in the follow through and suddenly stopping it
this makes the ball rise and then dip
but to get that sudden drastic dip moving hard and fast you need to keep your upperbody leaned forward and down

this will feel weird to start with but stick at it until it becomes natural
you only need to crunch for a split second

Ronaldo Free Kick Technique in Slow Motion

Everyone Has their own shooting style, but back to basic’s the difference between shooting and finishing is very important! Shooting is having a crack on goal to make the goalkeeper worry, finishing is making a chance then putting it in the net
Training for this is essential, know how to is just as essential

For Shooting Training You Want 3 Things:

Great Striking Ability
Solid hard strikes, with no backspin

Great 1-Touch Finishing Ability
Hitting the ball hard and accurate on the volley

Great Improvising Ability
You need to get around obstacles or fool the keeper, so using curl and backheel's

Training for things like this should be pretty apparent:

Note: Always practice equally with your weak foot!

Striking Ability

I consider low hard shots the best, preferably with slow or no spin

Jdefoe's Guide to hitting the ball with No Spin

But also practice sidefooted and high shots aswell, because its not like they never happen
Since in games you will want to in general be moving try practice that way

-First learn to hit the ball stationary, so you get the technique perfect
-When you have a no-spin (and accurate) shot 4/5 times
you can start practicing hitting the ball on the move
-As your technique improves you can start increasing the distance and angles away from goal and running quicker

1-Touch Finishing Ability

Now as you advance from perfecting your technique you need to work on how widely you can apply the skill, eg. take it up a level
the next level is of course 1-touch finishing, also try incorparte headers

-First you will need to practice using your kicking technique first time with high repetitions, eg. a wall
-You need to apply it to moving circumstances, so play airbourne 1-2's and finish them, with well struck kicks
-Then try do game realistic drills like finishing crosses and long passes, or bouncing balls at varied angles and distances while running
A friend to cross the ball will come in handy

Improvising Ability

This i as where you have to apply mad advanced techniques to your mastered finishing, such as curling and knuckle swerve, learning to manipulate the ball is most difficult but most rewarding

-Begin to learn the basic of follow through manipulation and different striking surface's, eg. follow through left gives you inside curl (for right footers) and outside of the boot gives you a trivlera
-Try doing these actions more accuratly and while moving with the ball also try doing them staright after controlling
-Now procced to first time finishing and long distance finishing, make sure as above you vary the angle speeds and distances

After all that, do a few repetitions everyday (eg. 25 per technique, per foot) everyday to keep in touch

Now once were past the technique, you need to understand how important self-beleif and decision making is

I cannot tell you how to be confident, you must train so you get confident in your ability and with time your confidence will come

then when deciding on the pitch always look first to get it on target, then to a side (or indeed over) the keeper
don't over think just relax, asses the place you feel you can hit fastest and shoot, if the keeper saves good for him, score the next time, if he doesn't you have a goal

Credit to Jdefoe:

Jdefoe's Step by Step Striking Guide

When shooting or learning to shoot three things must come into account:
What’s The Best Option?
Accuracy of the shot?
Power of the shot?
Smart shooting?

What’s The Best Option?
First is a shot you best option? Do you have the ability to pull it off? Are there better positioned teamates?
Now clearly if your in space in an obvious ‘danger area’ do not hesitate to have a crack, but if your marked or in an akward position think of your shooting ability or your team… you could play a 1-2 with a teamate and finish their pass!

1v1 Finishing
Zlatan5 wrote:
The best advice is take it or leave it. The best time to shoot on a 1v1 is when the keeper is rushing towards you, his body will be moving forward and might not cover all the angles right, but once they close your angle down you are very limited to what you can do. When the keeper is coming out you can pick your side thats more exposed and go for the shot and hopefully you get them. A low hard drive will usually beat any off balance keeper... also if the keeper rushes to fast out to you just chip it over him...

Accuracy of the shot?
Posing your body (if you have the time) will always help you shot accuracy and power, but having a good and clean follow through is very important… when to use accuracy?
When a keeper has left an exposed side of his goal or is rushing off his line, as a rebound… being cool and collected and just slotting the ball home can be the most effective way to score… When in close quarters (around the penalty area) accuracy and contact should be the most important factor.

when a defender is pressuring you it is best to pass the ball of, or take an early shot before the defender can cause you too much hassle

Power of the shot?
Getting a good ball contact and follow through can give you both accuracy and power, but if you have just power and most of your shots go flying over the bar, your useless man… learning kick techniques until there perfect and power will naturally come… power is most important when there is a crowded penalty area, a long shot, when your taking a snap shot… power comes from the speed of contraction of your leg not how hard you try swing it

power comes from technique, try to contact the ball right and the shot will be accuracte and powerful regardless

Image

Smart Shooting?
Smart Shooting is generally knowing where to shoot, when to shoot and how to shoot…

Where To Shoot?

Say your moving diagonally across the box, shoot for the post that your running away from as the keeper probably is tracking you and isn’t covering it right… always try to shoot the direction that the keeper will have most difficulty saving a shot, or picking your spot between Two defenders

Image

When To Shoot?

Choosing the perfect moment to strike, so your not rushed but there is no one close enough to block the shot… shooting in 1v1 is very hard to judge if the keeper is too close to you or your too far away… taking early shots before someone can catch up with you and tackle you, can catch most keepers by surprise… but knowing when to finish first time or when to take a touch and steady yourself is a vital skill…

How To Shoot?

Depending on the situation, knowing which skill to use i.e. 1v1 if to curl it round the keeper or chip it over him… its obvious if you have the time try the technique your most comfortable with (or most accurate). Fooling the keeper is what all great players (especially strikers) have among their arsenal of skills

Long Range

Shooting from long range:
Scoring from a distance is one of the best feelings in the game (especially chipping the keeper) usually because they have to be great shots to beat the keeper… power is usually a very important factor, and accuracy is usually sacrificed. The most common technique is the instep drive as it gives you a good mix of accuracy and power.

It usually helps to touch the ball ahead to give yourself a bit of a run up

Learning to kick the ball so it knuckles in the air and dips quickly is a useful skill, it might even bounce over a keepers attempted save…

Chipping is a greatly precise skill especially from range, the right mix of power dip and accuracy is needed for these shot to be successful…

The best time to take a long shot is when you have no obvious options infront of you, and time to steady yourself… although hitting a ball while its moving can give you an added amount of power

Long Range Shooting Guide (For Beginners)

3. Passing

The beautiful game is based on passing

When playing in a team your first though should always be 'can i pass?'
when passing your looking to:
move the ball to a position of potential safety for your team
move the ball to a position of potential danger to the opposition

in most parts of the pitch its important to put possesion first, and play safe short passing football
in later parts of the pitch its important to be creative and take risk's, cause risk more often then not means reward
if you don’t have any options AT ALL don’t be afraid to pass back a teammate
always remember, someone behind you can see more of the pitch than you

the weight of a pass is almost as important a the accuracy, you should make sure your teamates do not need to slow down or speed up to recive it

By Soccer4Life
The Passing Guide

Short
The most common short pass is the side footed pass into feet
This pass is to relieve pressure on yourself to better positioned team mates or even to move the ball around to open players these passes in general should be no more then 10 yard passes

its in the name 'Short' passes should be short in distance, short in execution time and short in moving time (how quick it moves)

Long

these should always have the intention of putting defenders under pressure or putting your players in a better attacking position

there are 3 main and common long passes
-Crossfeild (to change the point of attack, or to open up more space)
-Through Ball (to peneatrate the defence with a ball for attackers to chase)
-Cross (Kicked from the wings into the box for attackers to finish)

it is a great skill for any player to possess and can only really be learned from hours of practice and match experience

Tips for long passes:

Crossfeild
In general these are played from wing to wing when there are no short options
defenders tend to push across to overcrowd the area where the ball is

wingers free on the opposite side could benifit from a crossfeild kick
these kicks should be
-Fast
-Just above head height over the defence
-Slightly infront of the attacker so he can run onto the pass

Rooney Crossfeild Pass to Ronaldo
Here's a good Crossfeild Kick Example

Through Ball
these are in general played into fast strikers, who are keeping onside with diagonal runs
these are most effective on the counter attack when the defence is low on numbers and back tracking

Fast Strikers love these
these kicks should be
-Fast, but with backspin so they always boncue or roll in the strikers favor
-Low prefeably, but well struck long ones can be leathal
-Straight through and behind the defence but not too close to the keeper

Fabregas Through Pass
Here's a good Through Ball Example

Crosses
These are extremly common in games and are very dangerous if well delivered
the aim is for the centre of the goal just infront of the keeper for strikers to attack
of course you can improvise and drive in curling crosses or low crosses
or even shoot

Tall players love these
these kicks should be
-Whipped (Fast and medium height, when someone is open and the ball needs to be delivered quick or the box is completely packed
-Floated (High with lots of backspin, when a tall player is waiting in the area for a header
-Curled (to tempt the keeper off his line or to force him to stay on his line)

Basic Crossing Guide and Tips

1-Touch Football
There is always another level

If you can pass your doing good
But passing first time takes the game to a whole new tempo

this type of play is extremly hard to master as the ball will usually be moving and you have to adjust to how much weight on the pass and the direction, you should spend about 30 mins everyday practicing 1 touch passing and shooting

the real difficult part is getting the right weight in a pass, so it carries all the way to a teamate, but not slow enough to get intercepted but not hard enough to be mis-controlled

this part of the game has no secrect except practice, only the best can do anything with thier first touch

Trick Passing
Eventually you will have to learn how to disguise a pass to a team mate, to get the art of deception you will have to first get your team mates to understand what your doing… here are some trick passing techniques

L-Cut Pass
Same as the L-Cut dribbling move but you pass it off instead
drag the ball back, then hit it behind you so it travels in an L shape beside your standing leg

Image

3rd Eye: Ronaldinho does some great 3rd eye passes starting at 1:19
Basically passing when looking the other way or looking straight after contact… the trick is to look around you without making it too obvious (moving your head toward your intended target) even listen for a team mates call… looks great aswell…

Body Orientation
feint by looking one way and even try to shape you body like your passing in the direction your looking to really fool them

Heel Tap: Ronaldo does a great one at 1:17
Standing on the ball with one foot and dragging it back with that foot and kicking it with the inside of your other foot as you drag it back…

Support foot
the sole of your foot should be ontop of the ball and dragging it back to be struck by the inside of your other foot

Scoop Kick: Watch Ronaldinho do one at 3:31
Scoop the ball so you foot is completely under it and fling it up in the air! Doesn’t go very far but dips seriously fast…

Scotch Move: Watch Ronaldo at 0:51
Backheel the ball onto the inside of your other foot which is behing your backheeling foot… looks very stylish if you can get air on it…

Rabona: A great one at 1:11
Kicking the ball by swinging your leg around your supporting foot and striking it… a lot more effective and stylish if you use this to cross … hopping onto the kicking leg is important, this move takes a long time to learn

Henry Fake Kick: Henry Peforming his Trademark (Alot harder then it looks)
Great trick, go to take a shot but when putting your support foot down hit the edge of the ball so it skids off to a team mate, but after that (in the same motion) finish the kick. So it looks like you mis-kicked the ball.

Support foot
you should approach like you would a normal kick and then let the ball hit off your support foot so it flies away to the side

Contact
the inside of your supprt foot

Body Orientation
the same as if you were taking a normal pass

Backheel: Great ones at 1:19
Striking the ball With your heel… can be great for fooling opponents, and very stylish to pass this way…

Reverse Dis-Located Knee Pass:
With the ball in mid air perform a reverse dlk (reverse dis-located knee) trick to pass the ball.
Reverse Dlk: bend your knee, then straighten it and hit the ball with the back of your knee… simply Wow…

Edward Akka Pass: A video of the Edward Akka
Touch the ball up with your foot then quickly bring your knee across and knock the ball away to a team mate.

Ronaldo Pass: Check out a great one at 1:23
Like a cruyff chop, hit the ball with the inside of your foot behind your other leg to your target…

Shoulder Pass:
With the ball in the air, hit it with the pointy part of your shoulder to a team mate…

These tricks should help you be unpredictable, but don’t waste possession by trying one needlessly… is a game built on passing, don’t be afraid to test that!

Part 1.... out of 10? Man this will prove two things:
1) You're insane
2) You're insane :P

But I can't lie that this stuff isn't good either.

Wow, that is a long read and this is only part one of 10! NewBornProdigy you win this forum.

Great guide, a tip you might wanna add, take it or leave it. The best time to shoot on a one on one is when the keeper is coming out, his body will be moving forward and its pretty much 50/50, but once tehy close your angle down you are very limited to what you can do. When they are coming out you can pick your side and go for the shot and hopefully you get them.

Ive read 2 paragraphs and ive established that you either making lots of errors or you dont have a clue what your saying ,since when does backspin create dip? topspin makes dip and backspin makes high loofted balls that hang in the air for ages...

ha sorry man, i'll edit that in... i just was going by whenever i have seen someone kick it with backspin it dips dramatically, i presumed thats the way it works because thats how it works for me... i thought you could only get topspin on a volley!

my bad!!!

but there is ways to get dip from backspin! and like a fast dipping ball!

would you be able to reply with the difference between backspin and topspin...
and how you get topspin on a shot or pass! please!

i'll add it to the guide....

topspin is when the ball rotates from top to bottom, backspin is when it rotates from bottom to top, i have a guide on how to hit topspin somewhere... the ronaldo freekick one, and back spin is the opposite to that.

k man... could you tell me how to get topspin on a shot or pass then... or at least give me a link to your guide... so i can edit it in

and i thought ronaldo's free kicks don't spin... they knuckle in the air, i don't know the science behind it but its not topspin that makes a ronaldo rocket spin...

is juniniho's free kick a free kick with topspin?

i edited in video's and put a bit into the instep drive part

i also changed the kick technique bit

Great guide NBP.

Here are some sick video's of curving it with the inside of your foot. Note there is some wind... but its still quite amazing. Watch his plant foot, he does some sort of weird little twist after he kicks it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tx8vBNY1RUM

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u2NYSp0vMsI

Uhh... when you want to curve it right to left with your right foot you hit the right side of the ball and follow through towards your target it an almost circular motion to elongate contact. For left to right curve, you should probably be hitting it with your left foot any way, but you hit the left side of the ball and follow through left to right as best you can, but it won't curve quite as much because people's knees don't bend that way.

And I'm not trying to sound nit-picky, but it seems to make more sense to me to put body orientation and plant foot before follow through. That way people can see it in sort of chronological order.

cheers man i edited that in... just in different words

tell me if you don't like the edit!

I have to say that this is probably one of the best shooting guides I've read on the web. I noticed that many amateurs tend to overlook the whole ankle-locking aspect of shooting and I'm glad you put a lot of emphasis to it in your guide.

5/5
The rules of soccer are very simple, basically it is this: if it moves, kick it. If it doesn’t move, kick it until it does.

thanks man, thats really kind and appreciated :D

i like the shooting part but i really have to improve the passing section :(

i will get round to it soon, but if anyone has any suggestions in the mean-time, please post!!!

it would be such a great help! :D

oh and LongShot, i think your chronological order idea was wicked, thanks for the comment

Maybe its not necessary, but a little bit on one touch passing and shots would be nice.
