Hugh's dribbling guide

Alrite, I’ve noticed that there’s a lot of people on this forum who want to know how to do all sorts of fancy tricks and want help on how to do them; well let me tell you now, before I begin that this guide contains no instructions on fancy tricks.

The reason for this is because fancy tricks are useless in an actual game; what I’m going to teach you here is KISS (Keep It Simple Soccer) which should be applied to all game situations if you want to win. Before I start on dribbling I’d like to point out a free kick strategy that almost no one uses but is very effective: instead of shooting the ball around the wall, pass the ball around the wall to a player on your team. I can guarantee you your team will get more goals that way than any other free kick method, and that's also a really good example of what KISS is all about; take the simplest route possible to the goal and you'll score.

Now, the dribbling:

For defenders:
Don’t spend your time on moves designed to beat players; defenders need to keep the ball under control at all times when they have it and when they pass it the passes have got to be accurate and intelligent. If you find yourself responding badly under pressure as a defender and getting your feet tied up it’s usually a result of a bad touch or bad balance; if as a defender you can be confident and in control when you have the ball then you will find your passes going to intended targets much more easily and effectively. To achieve this you'd be best served by working on trapping the ball and then spotting the next pass as quickly as possible, try doing wall passes or long passes with another defender while practicing.

For inside mids:

Inside midfielders hold the game together by passing and keeping possession of the ball, so like the defenders you will need to develop good balance, touch and strength. You will need to develop the strength to hold off challenges and the balance and speed to be able to turn quickly with the ball and to explode past your man. Remember as a midfielder you’re not going to be running past their entire squad so get that out of your head; what you want to do is either play it to the wings, or to the strikers using direct passes or through balls. Field vision is also very important for mids, remember to look at your target before you pass. Work on quickly trapping, quickly turning and producing sharp and accurate passes and through balls.

For wingers:

Alright, your job is a little bit different than the insiders, you will be receiving lot of crosses and long balls so you need to have an extremely good touch, that means lots of juggling practice. Also you’ll need to be able to control the ball at speed, high speed, and be able to use fakes when running side by side with the defenders, practice stop starts and fakes that will get you enough room to deliver a cross. Scissors and cuts are most useful in that regard and the elastico may only be used if you can do it with your eyes closed, for the most part you will simply be trying to get a foot to the left or right of the defender and then cross it in; do only as much as is necessary. (i.e. KISS)

For strikers:

Now you might be expecting me to tell you fancy tricks are okay as a striker, well you’re wrong, strikers need to concentrate on moves that allow them to use their explosive speed and high pace to their maximum potential; remember that like the wingers you really only need to get 1 foot to either side of the attacker to explode past them, and then you’ll need to use your strength to hold of challenges. Scissors should only be used on the goalie as a striker and even then only use scissors if you can’t chip; strikers above all should remember that their main weapons are explosive speed, high pace and great ball control; party tricks aren't used in this position nearly as much as those previous two weapons.

Finally, you’ve seen me refer to “ball control” a few times in this thread so now I’ll specify what that really means.

Ball control is the ability to keep the ball close to your feet, without becoming off balance, sacrificing speed or opening yourself to attack. To control the ball like this you have to practice first touches with both feet and work on dribbling the ball close enough to your feet that you can explode with speed at any given time, but sufficiently far away that you won't trip over your own feet.

So that's basically it for my guide, if you have anything you think should be added feel free to post it below, remember to Keep It Simple Soccer and you'll end up head and shoulders above your rivals, because the simpler your style is the less likely you are to be checked or to miss a pass. Simple and effective is the way to go, but if you've already mastered something complex that works by all means use it, just don't spend too much time on party tricks.

Learn to do all the basics well and you shall go far.
Cheers!

good advice

Hey! That's a great guide you've made. Definitely 4 stars! You've got some great tips in there, and I really like how you gave different positions little sub headings. Awesome job, and I hope to see more posts like this to come.

good post hugh, your talking like my coaches now, they tell all wingers and strikers that we should only do a trick if we know it with our eyes closed. not to mention they tell all the forwards/ strikers speed and shot is our game not fancy tricks. i think youu should be a coach haha :D

well done Hugh! Nice guide. I love the KISS method, very original! :D

Hey, well done hugh! A very informative guide that will be sure to help loads of others! I liked how u referred to KISS (Keep It Simple Soccer) as the best method for a team to use to score goals/have the upper edge because it's true. With tricks you have the chance of stuffing up/getting ripped of the ball and others might call u a 'ball hog' but with KISS u will keep the whole team happy by playing the ball around more and will score goals alot more effectively.

Hey everyone, I've had a couple breakthroughs with teaching kids how to dribble the other day while assistant coaching on one of my schools junior teams, so I'd like to update this topic with some of the techniques that I've found will help you understand the easiest way to beat defenders.

Now I'm sure that by this point you'll have noticed that by throwing yourself into a 50 50 ball (one on the ground) and just tapping the ball to the side you'll nearly allways end up with it and as an added bonus you'll get past your marker right? Well this type of challenge can actually be applied to dribbling, which is actually the way moves like the 360 work if you do them properly. Here's a couple of questions to ask yourself:

Have you seen the way the Cruyff and Messi and Maradonna all dribble?

What is the most common way they beat markers?

The answer to the second question should be that the defender overcommits and they shift the ball to their other foot and go around them, either that or they just poke it past them, like in a 50-50 ball challenge. Am I right?

In fact what they're doing in these videos and games is exactly that, they're creating what the defender sees as a 50-50 ball even though the dribbler is in control of the ball all the time. If you take a look at the 360 spin you'll notice that it's only used once the defender has committed, otherwise you'll get stripped, and it's the same concept here. If you can learn to create a situation that looks like a 50-50 to the defender and get him to commit then you can get past him, no fakes needed.

So forget scissors and rollovers because this is probably the best fake you've got, when you're doing scissors you're making the defender think you're going to go one way, but with this technique you're making him think that all he has to do is step forward and reach his foot out to get the ball. And since you know where the ball's going you can anticipate perfectly where his foot is going to go and avoid it easily.

So I encourage you all to try out this way of dribbling in your pick up games, it requires a bit of practice but the best thing is that once you master it you'll be able to dribble as well as Messi or Ronaldinho and you can create your own individual ways to go by markers if you want to be flashy.

It's by far the easiest way to beat defenders (or so I've found) so give it a shot, you don't even have to create a 50-50 ball, just make the defender think that if he reaches his foot out then he can get the ball, again, since you know where the foot's going you know how to avoid it.

DISCLAIMER:
I am against going coast to coast, passing is one of the most important aspects of the game, don't forget it. Have fun, and Keep It Simple Soccer.

firstly great guide Hugh - this will help a lot of people

id just like to mention something about the fancy tricks - i dont think they are useless however i agree with you in the Keep It Simple Soccer - the most effective method of beating players and scoring goals is usually the simplist and the ones you know back to front. however tricks can be very useful but they are not for everyone - if you try some advanced tricks and they dont work for you, dont bother - stick with what is in this guide
