What to do and when

So I was playing footy/soccer/that one game we talk about on this forum all the time today and I missed a finish from a distance off to the right (the ball curved but not enough). I realized that a teammate closer to the goal was there but had a defender nearby her, but I didn't pass it.
Afterwards I began to wonder about something that I never really gave much thought to, What thing(s) does a person need to keep their eye on to know when to pass, shoot, cross, etc? or, What does a person have to do in order to know when to pass, shoot, cross, 'retreat', or whatever else may be necessary? I'm not looking for a "it comes by gut" thing because I know that there's more to it than that otherwise they wouldn't be writing books or making instructional videos on the game. Thanks ahead of time. edit - PS: as I reread this post I feel I'm leaving this open for you guys to discuss something from a certain position's point of view... I'm rather trying to learn about what in general needs to happen for someone to look and say "okay cool I need to pass it and not shoot it even though I'm like 5m from the goal", so to speak. Not strong, only aggressive. Not free, we only licensed. Not compassionate, only polite. Now who's the nicest? |

Basically, you need to ask yourself "who is in the better position to score and why", meaning that even if you are through on goal and have drawn the keeper, if there is someone wide open next to you with an available passing lane, you should probably take the passing lane to ensure the goal, which is all important in the end. Really, a half of a yard inside the box is enough space for a good striker to punish the opposition, and if their chances of putting a solid shot on goal are higher than yours, I would go for the pass. However, your calculations aren't always right. I am extremely confident in my shot, so sometimes I shoot impossible shots thinking that I have a high probability of scoring. So obviously you can get a bit skewed on your ideas, but just remember that throughout the game you just have to be scanning the field and picking out potential opportunities and weighing them up in your head to your own probability of scoring. Sound complicated? Well, that's because it is. It takes years of experience to acquire this ability and speed of thought, especially when there are defenders who are hot on your trail. That is why the premier league is the most difficult league to adapt to, because defender are so tireless and eager to win the ball, you have very little time to see what is the most dangerous thing you can do with the ball.
General things I look for before passing to a player is pretty much when he gets that extra step on the defender, just before he is offsides. It's all about the team, like I have said before, so I also look and examine other's finishing chances compared to mine. Personally, I am having trouble wording this, as it really is something that comes natural through practice, but in short, just put all glory aside, and realistically decide which play will get the goal whenever you get the ball in attack. ![]() God damn brewery!!! |

If I am on the outside area of the field and coming down towards the opposing team's side, do I need to make a decision then and there whether or not I'm going to cross or pass, or are things meant to be improvised and decided on the fly where you play off of what happens?
If I choose to make a pass to someone, what would I have to do to determine ahead of time whether or not this pass would be successful? Am I supposed to look for someone who is the most open, the person closest to the goal, or what? Not strong, only aggressive. Not free, we only licensed. Not compassionate, only polite. It all comes down to your confidence in your passing abilities. If you think that you can get a ball through the eye of a needle, go for it if the attacking run will most likely score. If not, just go for something simpler. The thing is, I can't tell you when you should pass and when not to without personally seeing you play and judging your talent, as a pass may be easy for a player like Fabregas, yet impossible for a player like Gavin Mahon. You see what I mean? You are the best judge of your ability, therefore it is up to you to decide whether you can make the most probable goalscoring chance with a certain pass or shot or whatever.

if you have confidence that you can score, then put the ball in the net.
If you think another person has a better chance to score, feed them the ball.... Theres tons of variables, you gotta come down to instinct. The moment you "think" the defender will be going the other way with the ball you just had. |
