last time i checked when italy played mexico in the '02 world cup all they could manage was a tie, now if we go foward four years mexico has a much better team and i'm sure they can go toe to toe

honestly the way fifa does the rankings is crap, every single north american team doesnt diserve its ranking, they are so high because theres not much competition over here so more wins come easily, in my mind many european teams should be higher

Not to be technical, but the whole post was comparing European style and South American style, Eusebio as an example of Portugese style doesn't really work because he was originally an African, so his playing style wasn't necessarily European.
The first thing you need to realize is that the Fifa World Rankings mean absolutly nothing and are complete and utter garbage. Ok, got that? North American teams like Mexico and the US play alot of Friendles which gives them the chance to collect more points. They also play against weak competition, the only competition is when they play each other.

eusebio played in europe for 99% of his professional career. he played a very european style. portuguese play has always been fast and creative, which is exactly how eusebio played. he did bring some traits of the african game, but his style was pretty european really, just an area of europe where the game is a little more interesting.
i do agree that the fifa rankings don't mean anything, but the u.s. does actually play some tough opposition. friendlies aren't limited to a team's specific region, so what you said doesn't really make much sense. already this year, they've beaten poland and japan, and played much better against germany than the scoreline suggested. points are gained on a potential system anyway, meaning that you don't get certain amounts of points for each win, but rather you get certain amounts of points from the percentage of games played that you win. so playing more friendlies really has little to do with it.
