Place the valve opposite of where you want the ball to bend towards. So for a right-footed shot that you want to bend to the left and down, position the valve right and upwards.

Experimentation is basically the key. Just try putting valve in one direction, and curling it. Then just change the valve in different directions to see what changes. The changes aren't THAT drastic, but if you change your kicking style it'll change. Instep drive vs curls that'll be the case.
