Side Volleys

I'm having trouble with side volleys. Yes, I know what you're thinking, how can the master of football be having trouble with something.[/sarcasm] but could someone help explain what stance you are supposed to be in before you hit the ball and when you hit the ball?

35 and 45 seconds in the vid is what I'm talking about but I still don't really know what stance to be in, how to strike it and follow-through.

Well, I only do side volleys and don't really understand regular volleys so I think I may be able to help you.

It really depends at the angle the ball is coming at you, which there are two types: The straight up and down bounce, or the lofted ball that just happens to arrive in an arc at you.

For the up and down bounce, I usually hit the ball when its at it highest, as if the ball isn't high enough you'll swing through it and it'll go up and over. You will require more power as you are stretching farther and you should always use your torso in a swinging motion. Your swinging leg should be parallel to the ground (a bit lower if the ball isn't bouncing that high), and should be slightly bent. Your supporting leg should be straight, perpendicular to the ground, and your toes on your supporting leg should be pointing to the left if you are volleying right footed (or vice versa). Lock your ankles, focus on the ball (not the goal) and swing right through it without going higher or lower (your leg should stay parallel to the ground). Ankles locked, strike the ball with the instep (not the sweet spot just the instep). You don't need any crazy follow through, keep your supporting foot on the ground.

If its an arc, considering it already possesses a decent of power from the height the ball fell at, you don't need alot of power, you just need to hit it right. Strike the ball right BEFORE it hits the ground with your instep, remember to lock your ankles or it will be inaccurate. Shooting leg should be bent, toes pointing 45° towards the ground and supporting leg is about 6 inches away from the ball (I think that it doesn't really matter if your supporting leg is bent or not, but I don't really remember so you're going to have to test that out). Don't follow through, just snap into the ball and pull your leg back. If you do this right, the ball should not spin/have very little spin and does not fly up and over.

(I think) I know what I'm saying, but if you have any other questions feel free to ask.

Thanks for the feedback. Can you not also do what you said in the first part for arced balls like Zidane did in the video? And also, what about my upper body, should it lean one way or do i keep it straight up and just use my arms for support/power?

I always lean to my left - I'm just more comfortable that way and I feel like I get both more power and control that way. I think that you should execute your volleys with the same technique that you normally kick. For example, I always lean to my left if I'm kicking with my right foot, but that may be because I have long feet and I hit the ground with my toes if I try to hit the ball with my laces.

All you need to do is get comfortable with hitting the ball while it's in the air. If you get like 3 hours against a wall it should start to feel more natural.

Well, tell me I'm wrong, I think it's about the timing. The technique is quite difficult to perform properly in consistant basis. Anyone heard of another variation to this type of volley? It's called the "French volley", simply just volley the ball with the side of the foot.

Side volley. Honestly, it's one of my favourite executions on the court and field. I once hit the post twice when I side volleyed twice on the same spot.

My only perfect execution is when the ball comes from the front.

First, open Ur stance wide with Ur feet two feet apart.
Second, let it bounce if U're not confident in hitting it one time. I sometimes do that.
Third, judge the timing of the ball falling when it reaches somewhere level with Ur face and lift up Ur kicking leg at that point.
Fourth, the ball should be at Ur hip when U're already hitting the ball. Don't forget the follow-through. Don't lean too much as U'll sky the shot.
