Expert Football > World Football > Germany 2006 > Mascots Goleo and Pille

November 21, 2004 After the ambiguously gay trio (Kaz, Ato and Nik) from World Cup 2002, FIFA organizers have outdone themselves once more. This time, they've come up with "Goleo VI", one of the lamest mascots in sports history. According to FIFA's official press release: "He combines the looks of Lothar Matthäus, the elegance of Diego Maradona and the all-round ability of Oliver Bierhoff ... albeit with a wink and a grin. There really couldn't be anyone better suited to the role as mascot." While his mane is somewhat reminiscent of the mullet that Matthaus used to sport during the 1980s, Goleo looks like a dude wearing a cheap Halloween costume. But this was not enough for the World Cup Organising Committee (OC) and their budget of 430 Million Euro. To make matters worse, they've also given Goleo his very own sidekick, Pille The Erudite Ball.
